LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Six dogs had been found dead in a locked moving truck in the heat, while Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers sought to rescue or take many more pets from two vehicles.

Police said a man is in jail and may be the owner of both a U-Haul and an SUV. A total of eight animals were discovered inside both trucks. No word on whether the man owns all of the animals.

Around 3 p.m., someone contacted 911 to report a dog locked in a parked U-Haul in the Mountain View Hospital parking lot at the 3100 block of N. Tenaya Way. Officers arrived, discovered the dog in distress, and shattered the window to rescue it. Police say the rescued mixed-breedĀ dog is doing well.

When authorities investigated the vehicle, they discovered six more dead dogs in the back of the truck. Aside from the dogs, authorities stated the U-Haul was otherwise empty. Police encircled a burgundy SUV a few parking spots away. Officers discovered two dogs and two cats inside, saying the air conditioning was turned on and the animals were in good health.

Police could not explain why the man, the animals, and the two vehicles were all in the hospital parking lot.

The Animal Cruelty Section is examining the event to determine whether the dogs died as a result of heat or negligenceĀ and whether the guy should face felony or misdemeanor charges.

According to fox5vegas.com, temperatures inside a closed moving truck can reach 140 degrees or more.”This is completely preventable,” stated Lt. Bill Giblin of the LVMPD. “If your dog’s in your vehicle at any point of the day this time of year, there’s a potential they can become dehydrated and die as a result,” he stated.

The Animal Foundation said it was awaiting the arrival of many animals seized during the investigation Tuesday night and had no update on their status.
