Alabama’s HUNTSVILLE (WHNT) — Governor Kay Ivey said that a special election is going to be held in Marshall County to fill the House District 27 seat, which is now unoccupied.
Although Wes Kitchens previously held the position, he was elected in a special election held on January 9 to take Clay Scofield’s place in Senate District 9. Kitchens took the oath of office as a senator on Tuesday.
Arab, Guntersville, Union Grove, and Grant are all included in District 27. Governor Ivey has scheduled the primary on April 2; the runoff election is scheduled for April 30; and the general election is scheduled for July 16.
Three Republicans, including Kitchens, competed for the Senate District 9 seat. Gaining fifty-two percent of the vote, he won without a runoff. The office of the Alabama Secretary of State declared that a general election was not required because no Democratic candidate was eligible to run for the position.
Three Republicans have declared their intention to run for the District 27 seat as of right now.
Among the contenders is Stacy George, a farmer and businesswoman who has placed third in the Senate District contest and has competed twice for governor;
Alan Miller, a Redstone Federal Credit Union branch manager who is presently a member of the Arab City Council;
Jeana Ross, a resident of Guntersville, was the leader of the Marshall County Republican Party and the former head of Alabama’s Department of Early Childhood Education.
To yet, no Democratic candidate for the seat has declared their intention to run. A representative for the Alabama Democratic Party informed News 19 today that the organization is still seeking candidates for the position.
According to Ivey, the deadline for major party candidates to qualify is this Tuesday, January 30.
