The counties of Elk, Chautauqua, Greenwood, Chase, Marion, McPherson, Rice, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Osborne, and Rooks, as well as all locations to the north and east of these counties, are subject to a severe fog advisory until 8 a.m. today. This advisory covers a significant chunk of that region.

The visibility in a significant portion of this region will be less than one mile throughout the entire day and immediately after sunrise. Please allow additional time for travel and make sure to activate your low-beam headlights as soon as possible today.

A large area of high pressure that covers the eastern half of the United States will provide our region with a beautiful Sunday with a plethora of sunshine.

Additionally, a gusty flow of air from the southeast to the southwest will push afternoon highs into the upper 50s and lower 60s, which is approximately 15 degrees higher than the average for the middle of December (Wichita’s average high temperature is 46). The southwestern part of the state is going to experience a temperature of seventy degrees!

Temperatures will drop by a few degrees for the beginning of the following workweek as a result of a weak cold front that will move across the region late tonight and this evening. However, temperatures will still exceed the average by several degrees. The low temperatures for Sunday night will vary from the 20s in western Kansas to the 30s in central Kansas. The skies will be partly cloudy over the state.

High temperatures will be in the upper 40s to middle 50s on Monday, with gusty breezes and dry weather to begin the work week. The weather will be nice and only slightly cooler than it was on Sunday.

Tuesday evening will see the passage of a more powerful cold front, which will bring temperatures back down to a level that is roughly equivalent to the average throughout the middle of the week. However, the weather is expected to remain dry.

There will be a slight increase in temperature at the end of this week, which will be followed by a return to colder temperatures by the weekend after next. The weather is forecast to remain calm.

There is a slim possibility of a white Christmas, according to a sneak peek at Christmas week already. Across the Central Plains, the trend appears to bring temperatures that are milder than average throughout the region.

As a result of the emerging La Nina pattern, it is quite probable that any prospective storm systems will continue to avoid our region and instead affect the south and east. The travel arrangements for Christmas will, at the very least, be trouble-free!
