A lady suffered serious injuries Monday after her automobile hit a patch of ice and skidded into oncoming traffic in North Merrick, according to police.

It happened shortly before 9 a.m., while the 59-year-old female driver was driving westbound on Jerusalem Avenue.
According to a neighbor, the crash was unexpected.

The neighbor stated, “I heard a very, very loud bang.” According to police, her vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane near the Canton Drive intersection, colliding with a Tesla driven by a 42-year-old male.

After the incident, the woman was ejected from her vehicle.

Both drivers were sent to hospital.

The woman is reported to be in critical condition. The other driver’s condition is yet unknown. “That was probably one of the worst I’ve ever seen…it sounded like something was rolling too, so I think the car flipped a couple of times because when I went out there it was on its side,” a neighbor said about the incident and the damage he saw.

One man informed News 12 off-camera that he observed ice in the same area as the incident around three hours after it occurred.

On Monday afternoon, News 12 was at the scene of the incident on Jerusalem Avenue near Canton Drive and noticed water coming up from the asphalt.

News 12 reached out to the Town of Hempstead to see if the work being done on Jerusalem Avenue near Canton Drive had anything to do with the area of ice, but has yet to hear back.
