A local man died after being partially thrown from the pickup truck he was driving early Sunday morning in southern Missouri.
The anonymous 25-year-old Mammoth Spring resident was pronounced deceased at the site of the one-vehicle accident in Oregon County more than an hour after it happened.
The driver, 54-year-old Robert Powell of Thayer, was taken to Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains with critical injuries and faces a felony charge of driving while drunk, resulting in the death of another.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Powell and his passenger were driving on Missouri Highway 142.
They were about seven miles northwest of Myrtle when the truck went off the road and flipped, partially ejecting the Mammoth Spring man.
Neither occupant of the truck wore a seat belt. The passenger’s death marks Troop G’s 23rd fatality this year, compared to 33 in the same period in 2023.
The accident occurred at 12:28 a.m. and totaled the vehicle.
