What Factors Influence the Amount of SNAP Benefits that a Household Can Receive?

To be eligible for SNAP, households must pass two income requirements. First, gross monthly income should be less than 130% of the poverty line. Then, net income after deductions must fall below 100% of the poverty level.

Assets – Households without an elderly or disabled person must have no more than $2,750 in assets. Households with an elderly or disabled member must have assets totaling $4,250 or less. Most automobiles do not count toward the asset limit.

Deductions – To calculate net income for SNAP, numerous deductions are made from gross income:

  • Standard deduction ($193 for 1-3 person homes in Fiscal Year 2024)
  • Earned income deduction (20 percent of earnings)
  • Dependent Care Deduction
  • Medical expense deduction
  • Child Support Deduction
  • Excess Shelter Cost Deduction

SNAP benefits are based on household size and the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan. A single-person household can receive up to $291 in fiscal year 2024, According to okdiario. Meanwhile, an eight-person household may receive up to $1,751.

The SNAP program expects households to spend 30% of their income on food. A family’s monthly benefit is the maximum for its size, minus the 30% contribution.
