A suspect is in custody following a manhunt after a Texas deputy constable was shot and died on his way to work, according to authorities.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 named the officer who was slain as Deputy Maher Husseini. Police say the suspect was apprehended after a brief manhunt. The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office noticed the suspect’s vehicle and pursued it until it crashed into the sea near Galveston’s Old Causeway, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Houston Police Department Chief Noe Diaz described the culprit as an “assailant,” saying Husseini was driving to work in his car and had stopped at a red light when a guy left a vehicle, stepped up, and shot the deputy.
“We are working on an unfortunate, tragic incident, where a local constable was shot by an assailant who we have yet to identify,” Diaz added, saying that Husseini was shot multiple times.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, but say he is a Middle Eastern male, 35 to 40 years old, 5-foot-9, 200 pounds, and was last seen wearing a dark shirt, dark pants, and dark thinning hair.
The suspect’s car was a charcoal-gray Chevy Impala with a “very unique bumper disfigurement underneath,” Diaz added.

Husseini had worked for Constable Mark Herman’s office since 2021, patrolling the South-Central District, according to authorities.

“Please keep Deputy Constable Husseini in your prayers,” the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 stated on X. Diaz previously expressed how the loss of life affected the local community, calling it “terrible” and “shouldn’t happen.”
“Any loss of life causes trauma. “Any death is terrible in this community,” he stated. “Being a deputy pulls us closer together as police officers who are here to serve our communities. It should not happen.”
