Authorities in Georgia have announced the cause of death for a mother who recently lost both her son and brother to gun violence.
Chanell Crosby, 35, died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, which also declared her death a homicide.
According to the medical examiner’s report, which PEOPLE acquired, her body showed symptoms of decomposition when discovered.
Crosby’s family reported her missing on July 14, according to an announcement issued by the Atlanta Police Department following her death.
Authorities say she was last seen leaving on a trip to Macon, Georgia, with her boyfriend, WSB TV reported at the time.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, on July 19, officers responded to a complaint of an unresponsive female and discovered her “not alert, conscious, or breathing” in Atlanta, Georgia. She was pronounced dead at the spot.
Crosby was looking for answers in the death of her 13-year-old son, Jamiren Crosby, who was shot minutes away from his home in Lithonia, Ga., according to 11 Alive News.
Chanell’s brother was found tragically murdered in an Atlanta apartment complex earlier that year, in April, after winning $4,000 on a slot machine, according to his relatives.
Following the sad shootings, Chanell established a foundation in their family’s honor “focused on gun violence, police brutality, and community service,” she told WSB-TV in June 2023.
“We went around painting shelters and donating to children’s and women’s shelters,” she told the site of the foundation’s activities.
At the time Chanell died, no one had been arrested in connection with Jamiren’s murder. As of the date of this report, there was no information accessible on the Atlanta Police Department’s website indicating any developments in the investigation into Chanell’s death.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Chanell’s family with funeral expenses and resources for the three children she left behind.
