A 20-year-old man from Georgia has been taken into custody in connection with the death of his 16-year-old pregnant ex-girlfriend, whose body was discovered by her family in a wooded area near their house early Monday morning.

Jesus Monroy was arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of providing false information to a police officer during the investigation into Mia Campos’ murder, according to records examined by Law&Crime.

According to a news release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call around 1 a.m. on Monday, July 15, in the 3600 block of Stephens Road in Loganville, Georgia, roughly 30 miles east of Atlanta. According to police, Mia’s family members discovered her dead and called 911.

The family informed authorities that Mia had left their home the previous evening with an “unknown person.” When Mia did not return home, her family tracked her smartphone using a location app, which led them to her remains.

“Based on the initial evidence discovered at the scene, investigators were unable to determine how (Mia) Campos died,” the announcement states. “Detectives, crime scene investigators, and the medical examiner’s office all arrived to examine the scene and interview witnesses. Following an examination on July 16, the medical examiner decided that Mia Campos’ death was a homicide.

On Wednesday, police made their first arrest in the case. According to the announcement, Monroy, Mia’s ex-boyfriend, was held for “giving false statements to a police officer.” Authorities reportedly told Atlanta CBS station WANF that Monroy is not the only person being investigated.

Mia’s relatives verified to WANF that Monroy was the father of the pregnant teen’s kid and described the horrible moment they discovered her death.

“I found my daughter laid face down,” her father, Edward Campos, told the broadcaster. “It was challenging. I sensed there was something wrong with her lips and her bleeding nose. “They killed my baby.”

Edward Campos allegedly stated that he was optimistic that authorities would find out what happened to his daughter, adding, “Justice is coming soon.”

Mia’s mother created a GoFundMe campaign to seek funds for her daughter’s funeral.

“Mia, my daughter, the girl of my eyes, my baby, died while carrying her son. “I asked God to watch over her and her baby, and now she and my grandson are in heaven with God,” the page reads. “I ask you for help to give her and her baby a dignified burial, thanks.”

Authorities highlighted that the investigation into Mia’s death was still ongoing and asked anyone with information about the case to call detectives at 770-513-5300 or visit stopcrimeATL.com. Individuals who offer information that leads to an arrest or indictment can get a financial reward.
