The state of Arizona owns all thirteen prisons. However, every jail has the same name; the only difference is that each one has its own county name. To generate a different tone, each jail in Arizona is first referred to as the Arizona State Jails Complex, followed by the county name.
Arizona State Prison Complex, Ayman
The Ayman State Prison Complex is Arizona’s largest correctional facility. It opened to the public in 1991 and has a capacity of 4,449 convicts. It proved to have the highest risk of infiltration and jail uprisings, thus it now has three, four, and five layers of security all in one facility. Furthermore, it is manned by a large number of guards.
The Ayman State Prison Complex in Arizona has been the scene of numerous crimes and murders. Inmates in the Arizona State Prison Complex-Ayman have a long history of violent felonies, including murder.
When confined in a group, they are more prone to engage in violence and commit murder. Thompson was charged with murder in 2019 while jailed at Arizona’s Ayman State Prison. His sister-in-law and brother came to see him, but he savagely murdered them and the other cops with a little, handmade knife. Only he exited from the room, horribly injured but alive.
Arizona State Prison Complex, Perryville
The Arizona State Jail Complex—Perryville has a capacity of 460 inmates, making it Arizona’s second-largest jail. The inaugural year was 1981. This home only houses women on death row.
In 1997, at the Arizona State Prison Complex – Perryville, a correctional guard was killed while attempting to converse with three well-behaved offenders. One of the convicts stabbed the cop, and the others held him down and stabbed him too. He was only able to put an end to the assault until a backup cop arrived. The three culprits were then charged with murder, faced harsh punishment up to execution, and had no chance of being released on bond.
Arizona State Prison Complex, Douglas, Arizona
Arizona State Prison Complex—Douglas is one of the state’s thirteen prisons. The Arizona Department of Corrections owns and operates all of Arizona’s prisons. This jail has enough accommodation for 2,148 convicts. Plus, it all began in 1984.
Douglas, an Arizona state prison, has a troubled history of rioting and protesting. A tragedy occurred shortly after the prison opened in 1987, resulting in its destruction and rendering it unsafe for anyone to remain within. Many captives, including some who have already perished, will get the opportunity to flee as a result of this. According to reports, 37 inmates died, while the rest were unsubstantiated.
Despite the prompt reconstruction and reopening of the Arizona State Prison Complex—Douglas—in 2017, a demonstration against racial inequality occurred. Six of the prison’s good guards and personnel were killed during the protest, and seventeen inmates died as a result.
Arizona State Prison Complex, Phoenix
The Arizona State Prison Complex—Phoenix is Arizona’s main jail and the administrative headquarters for all twelve of its institutions. Plus, everyone knows Phoenix is Arizona’s capital, so the prison there will have the maximum level of security conceivable. With over a hundred prisoners on death row and the remaining number unknown, it is a large institution.
Despite being a high-security prison with multiple guards, the jail nonetheless sees homicides, most of which are stabbings. The murders take place in the prison cafeteria and other areas. Kenneth W. Thompson, a lifer who has murdered fellow inmates in different Arizona prisons, is now housed at the Arizona State Prison Complex—Phoenix.
Unfortunately, he was still able to procure a knife, which he used to murder two of the cellmates. Even though he is already facing charges of imprisonment until death, no one is stopping him. His present living conditions include isolation in a single cell with limited access to all parts of the institution.
Arizona State Prison Complex, Florence
When it initially opened in 1908, the Arizona State Prison Complex—Florence could accommodate 3,946 inmates. It contains the primary federal-state criminals and has four levels of security.
Despite having four layers of security, the Arizona State Prison Complex—Florence was the scene of a massive riot in 2020, which allegedly ended in an explosion in the prison’s kitchen section, allowing hundreds of convicts to flee.
Following the explosion, which killed several guards, officers, and cooks, officers began to refer to the disturbance as a war zone. They elected to boost security following the disturbance. Nonetheless, the Arizona Department of Corrections disagreed and demanded an investigation into the battle zone violence, as it was suspected that the missing male police officers were involved.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Arizona’s state-owned prisons have different histories and security levels despite sharing the same name. Ayman State Prison Complex, the largest and most violent, is the most difficult. Other institutions, including Perryville, Douglas, Phoenix, and Florence, have seen violent assaults and riots, emphasizing state penal system issues. Inmates and workers in these different facilities must be protected by addressing safety concerns and adopting appropriate security measures.
