A 33-year-old man was sentenced to six life sentences after being convicted of rape and kidnapping charges against five different minor victims, San Mateo County prosecutors announced Tuesday.

According to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, a judge sentenced Kaylan Freeman last Friday after he was convicted in August of sexual attacks on children aged 13 to 18.

Prosecutors claimed that Freeman, of El Granada, knew all of the victims and abused them with force and threats while on outings, including one who was taken to San Francisco under the premise of supper but was transported to a remote location and raped.

Freeman was detained at his house in January 2021, following a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office investigation that began in 2012.

Two victim impact statements were read during Friday’s sentencing hearing, and the judge informed Freeman that he appeared to have no remorse for his actions and was smirking in court, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Freeman was convicted under California’s “One Strike” rule, which requires such terms in sexual assault cases with specific circumstances, such as several victims.

Freeman’s defense attorney, Charles Smith III, opposed the law, claiming that the circumstances of the case did not justify a life sentence.

“It’s unfortunate that the Legislature has decided to take the sentencing decisions away from judges and is mandating these Draconian sentences,” Smith told the audience.
