31-year-old Amarillo Man Pronounced Dead After Being Hit by RV on I-40 at Night

CARSON COUNTY – A 31-year-old Amarillo man died late Monday in an accident involving a camper vehicle on Interstate 40 near Groom.

The crash occurred around 11:18 p.m., approximately 0.89 miles west of Groom. The route was clear, with dry pavement, and the posted speed limit in the region was 75 mph.

The accident included a 2004 Roadtrek 190 Popular RV moving eastward in the right lane. Brandon Langston, 35, of Duncan, Oklahoma, tried to avoid a person standing in the road by braking and turning to the right, but was unable to escape the incident.

The pedestrian, Johnathan Morales, 31, of Amarillo, was pronounced dead at the scene by Carson County Justice of the Peace Kathleen Barkley.

Langston, who was wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured in the collision. Laura McCartney, 52, of Oklahoma City, and Kevin Scott, 43, of Moore, Oklahoma, were also uninjured. McCartney did not use a seatbelt, while Scott did.

The Texas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
