GBI Investigation Continues Into Summerville Man’s Death

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues the investigation into the death of a fifty-five-year-old Summerville man at the Floyd County Jail.

David Lee Daniel was originally booked into the Floyd County Jail three days after Christmas on charges of theft by taking.   According to past reports, Daniel was accused of taking a $700 cell phone at Floyd Medical Center in March of last year.  A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was booked into the Floyd County Jail in December.

Then, on January 2nd of this year, Daniel was accused of hitting a Floyd County sheriff’s deputy in the face.  He was charged with simple battery against a law enforcement officer in connection with that incident.

Last Friday, Daniel was found unresponsive in his cell. Jail staff attempted lifesaving efforts, but Daniel was declared deceased when he was transported to a local hospital.

Following protocol, the GBI was called in to investigate Daniel’s death.
