North Georgia Healthcare Center Agrees to Settle in Opioid Prescription Complaint

North Georgia Healthcare Center and CEO Delaine Hunter have agreed to pay $130,000 to settle allegations from the Department of Justice in an opioid prescription complaint.
Prosecutors claimed that a former physician at the facility in Ringgold, Dr. Gary Smith, prescribed opioids when they weren’t needed and without medical review.
“Medical professionals are trusted to prescribe controlled substances in compliance with the law and in a manner that protects the health and safety of their patients,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt R. Erskine.
North Georgia Healthcare was accused of violating the False Claims Act for more than six years by allowing the prescriptions.
This settlement resolves a federal lawsuit brought against North Georgia Healthcare Center, filed by a former employee who acted as a whistleblower.
Delaine Hunter is also the CEO and Founder of Healthy Foundations… a non-profit preparing to build a multi-purpose resident and recovery campus just outside LaFayette on Burnt Mill Road.
