Major Project Undersay to Restore/Identify Graves in African-American Cemetery

A major project is underway in Chickamauga to restore and identify graves in an African-American cemetery.  University of Georgia students are helping with restoration plans.
The District Hill Cemetery has many unmarked slave burials and was used by black families through the 1940’s.  Since then, many of the markers have disappeared and the grounds became overgrown.
About 130 identified burials remain on the records of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  Most of those graves have been located using ground-penetrating radar… and will be suitably marked as part of the restoration.
