Trion High School graduate and Chattooga County’s hometown Olympian Brody Malone advanced for the men’s gymnastics individual all-around finals at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Malone was competing with the USA men’s gymnastics team as they sought to qualify for the team final. Each participant’s individual performance also counted toward qualifying for the all-round finals.
Malone scored in the 13.733 on the pommel horse, the 28th-best individual score. Malone followed that with a powerful performance on the horizontal bar and great performances on the vault, rings and parallel bars. After his vault, which clinched his place in the all-around final, the NBC announcers marveled at how he looked “cool, calm and collected” he looked and said he was “just such an impressive athlete.”
Brody Malone’s overall score of 85.298 was the highest on the USA team.
Malone’s score allowed him and fellow USA teammate Samuel Mikulak for the all-round final that is being held Monday morning.
