A man involved in a Sunday morning shooting that left two people dead was shot and killed after he opened fire on tactical squad members following the incident.
According to reports around 6:30am the two victims, a 34 year old man and a 35 year old woman – were approached by the gunman at Brother Bryan Park, at 10th Avenue South and Richard Arrington Jr., Boulevard. According to witness accounts there was a verbal altercation, with a dog being mentioned. The man and woman were walking a dog at the time. Investigators state that they have established that the suspect and the female victim were involved in a dating relationship.
It’s still unclear what led to that suspect, now identified as 39 year old Brian Timothy Dunne, opening fire.
The male victim was pronounced dead on the sidewalk – while the female victim was found in the middle of the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead prior to noon.
Evidence led law enforcement to the residence of Dunne at the Stratford Apartments, 1010 18th Street South, to carry out a search warrant. Dunne reportedly opened fire on the tactical squad, who returned fire, fatally injuring him.
All four officers are expected to fully recover. Two were shot, and two were grazed.
The incident remains under investigation.
