4 FACING FELONY CHARGES; QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT EQUALITY IN LOCAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

Four young black men are facing felony charges in an upcoming trial… while their families and the NAACP raise questions about race equity in the local justice system.
WQCH aired the police report back in October, 2019… stating that the four were accused in an armed robbery and beating of a white couple at the old LaFayette High football field.  Police identified the suspects as Matthew Avery Asbeury, Kameron Gage Shropshire, Quintavious Knox and Larell D. Hampton.  Their ages ranged from 17 to 19 at the time.
A Chattanooga TV outlet aired a report Tuesday, quoting family members and others saying there are discrepancies between the initial reports of the crime and evidence now obtained from body-cam video.  They say Police believe the white couple lied to them about the crime… but were never charged.  Critics are calling that, racial bias.
Family members also say the charges against the four black males should be reduced from felonies to misdemeanors.
The District Attorney’s office declined comment on the upcoming trial.
