A Menlo resident was arrested last Friday on charges of theft from a motor vehicle after he entered a parked car at the Menlo Lucky’s grocery store.
While on patrol on February 5th, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of a theft at the Lucky’s parking lot in Menlo. Upon arriving officers spoke with Mrs. Rhonda Mason who stated that she had stopped by Lucky’s to pick up a few items. She parked her car in the alley beside the store and when she exited she noticed that some items were missing. The missing items included her work bag, a clipboard, a jacket, a screwdriver, and Mrs. Masons cell phone.
Store manager, Freddie Hughes had pulled surveillance videos which shows a man, who’s car was parked in front of Mrs. Masons, walk up to her vehicle 3 times before opening the door and taking the missing items. Hughes identified the man as Michael Kelly Kirby, a regular at Menlo Lucky’s. Mr. Kirby had just left Lucky’s when his card had declined his purchase.
Officers located Kirby driving down the road near his home on Edison St. and initiated a traffic stop. Mr. Kirby admitted to being at Lucky’s earlier but denied having taken the items from Mrs. Masons car. Officers placed Kirby under arrest and transported him to the Chattooga County Jail. Mr. Kirby has been charged with entering an automobile, theft by taking, and also an open container charge.
