A nineteen-year-old driver was charged with driving under the influence and multiple other charges on Sunday after he crashed into a building on Rome Boulevard (Highway 27) near the intersection of Highway 48.
Summerville Police say that Okwudilli Emmanuel Okechukwu, of Monroe, Georgia, was under the influence of alcohol when his car left the roadway and struck the building. The driver told officers that he had hydroplaned, but officers said that the alcohol was the main contributing factor to the accident. Okechukwu and the passengers in the vehicle refused medical treatment on the scene.
A witness on the scene said that she had to take the sidewalk in her vehicle to keep from being sideswiped by Okechukwu’s vehicle.
The driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, underage possession of alcohol, driving too fast for conditions, driving without a valid license, failure to maintain a single lane, open container of alcohol, driving without license on person and a seat belt violation.
