Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton is warning Chattooga County residents about a phone scam where someone is impersonating the tax commissioner’s office.
Hampton posted on social media earlier this week:
There is a scam currently targeting Chattooga County property owners. The caller is claiming to be me or someone from my office, asking for payment for taxes immediately to avoid tax sale. In this scam, the caller is looking to gain access to your bank account.
The Chattooga County Tax Commissioner’s Office will never demand payment over the phone. If I call you regarding your bill, it will be only as a reminder and NEVER to solicit a telephone payment. Additionally, notice of delinquent taxes are sent via mail, and tax sale letters have the word “LEVY” at the top.
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and notify the Federal Trade Commission here.
