Walker County Sole Commissioner Shannon Whitfield announced on Monday that the Walker County Government operations “will be reduced to mission critical services”, effective yesterday. The request is one step short of the States of Emergency that have been issued by Chattooga County and Floyd County.
Whitfield said, “Emergency Management, Fire-Rescue, Law Enforcement, Ambulance Services and 911 will remain open, along with the Landfill and Transit bus service. Many other services will be impacted…most will have limited staff and require phone contact, including the Commissioner’s office, Tax office, Magistrate and Probate courts. Animal control is only responding to dog bite cases.”
Commissioner Shannon Whitfield also encouraged local restaurants to voluntarily close their dining rooms and serve customers via drive-thru and delivery options only.
Event organizers and community groups with planned gatherings of more than 10 people have been urged to postpone or cancel their functions as well.
