Chattooga County’s unemployment numbers improved drastically according to numbers released by the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday.
The Department of Labor Numbers for January showed Chattooga County with an unemployment rate of 12.2% – the highest in the state.
County Commissioner Jason Winters said that those numbers seemed drastic, even with some area employers having temporary layoffs in the month of December. The Department of Labor admitted that the 12.2% number was an anomaly and highly unusual.
According to the most recent release from the Georgia Department of Labor, in December there were 266 initial unemployment claims filed in Chattooga County. That number dropped to just 63 in January – a decrease of 76.3%.
