A twenty-two-year-old Chattooga County woman died in a vehicle accident on Sunday morning.
The accident happened on Highway 27 near the Pennville Church of Christ at Greeson Street. Both vehicles involved in the accident received extensive damage. Traffic was rerouted around the crash scene for a period of time on Sunday morning.
Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater confirmed the fatality around 9 AM on Sunday and Sheriff Mark Schrader released a statement a short time later:
The Sheriffs Office and the Georgia State Patrol are finishing up working the fatal crash scene on Highway 27 near Pennville Church of Christ. Haley Brianna Smith, 22, of Summerville was fatally injured in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a Rome Hospital in serious condition.
Reports indicated that the other driver was a female from Rome and was transported to a Rome hospital by Redmond EMS with injuries. The extent of the other driver’s injuries is not known at this time.
The Georgia State Patrol sent a Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) to the scene. More details on the accident will be available when a report is released by the Georgia State Patrol Post in Rome.
