An inmate in the Chattooga County Jail was hospitalized over the weekend after he attempted to harm himself.
Sheriff Schrader said that the incident happened between 5 and 6 PM on Saturday, after the evening meal was served. The inmate got his supper and then returned to his cell. He was discovered about ten minutes later by jail staff. Redmond EMS responded to the jail and transported the inmate to a hospital in Rome, where he is in serious condition.
Sheriff Schrader said that he was thankful that jail personnel noticed that something was not right and checked the cell, where they discovered what had happened. The sheriff called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident. The inmate’s name is being withheld pending the investigation by the GBI.
The sheriff said that the inmate is not from Chattooga County originally and has no close relatives living in the county. The inmate has a long history of petty crimes and probation violations. Sheriff Schrader said that he has released the inmate on bond because the inmate’s family has secured help for the man at a psychiatric facility once he is released from the hospital.
Schrader said that the quick actions of the jail officers likely saved the inmate’s life.
