10-year-old Child Struck and Killed by Vehicle While Riding Bike to School in St. Joseph County

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, a 10-year-old child died after being struck by a vehicle on Monday in Sherman Township.

Deputies arrived at the crash near Banker and Balk Road after receiving reports that youngsters riding bikes to school had been hit soon after 8 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies determined that a 29-year-old Vicksburg male was driving west on Banker Street when he failed to spot the youngsters and struck one of them. Lifesaving attempts were undertaken, but the 10-year-old child was declared dead on the site.

The motorist was detained and charged with felony accident-related offenses. The sheriff’s office did not specify what charges he may face at his arraignment, which is scheduled for today.

The Sheriff’s Office was supported on the scene by St. Joseph County Victim Services, St. Joseph County Central Dispatch, the St. Joseph County Prosecutors Office, Michigan State Police, Tri-Township Fire and Rescue, LifeCare Ambulance, Sturgis Towing and Recovery, and other St. Joseph County individuals.
